Although several important components underneath the Ram trucks have some level of protection from the factory, these trucks come critically unprepared to prevent damage to the most essential - and expensive - components of the drivetrain: the Engine and Transmission themselves. This armor applies particularly to those trucks used in forested, snowy and rocky areas, where anything as simple as a small branch on the ground, a rock, or packed snow can penetrate, deform or otherwise critically damage these expensive and important pieces of the drivetrain.

This component is designed to offer protection to several critical components - the Engine oil pan, the Transmission oil pan, the front Driveshaft, the Transmission Oil Lines, and the exhaust tube as it crosses in front of the Transmission crossmember. This is meant to get you out and back home again.

Ecodiesel Additional Protection: Unique to the diesel powertrain of these trucks is the existence of Diesel Exhaust Fluid and user-serviceable fuel filtration. The armor for the Ecodiesel trucks is a package kit that *includes* hard-service protection for the frame-mounted fuel filter canister, and for the DEF lines where they are critically exposed at the transmission crossmember. The protection afforded by these two pieces alone is incredibly important, as it is extremely easy to damage the fuel filter housing and to snag the DEF lines on small brush or branches. The fuel filter drain is easily accessible with the armor installed.

Construction: The Skid is manufactured from formed 3/16" HRPO steel plate that runs the length of both oil pans, and has a cutout surrounding the Engine oil drain to allow for easy oil changes without removing the Skid. Works with aftermarket oil drain valves such as the Fumoto Valve, and the Skid will now protect your valve from being damaged or torn off during offroad use.

Oil Changes:

  • 5.7 Hemi: The oil can be changed through the oil drain port in the armor. An aftermarket drain valve such as a Fumoto can also be used and is safely protected.
  • 3.6 Pentastar: An aftermarket drain valve is *highly* recommended with this engine, and should be installed with an oil change at the time of installing this armor. The oil drain is in a difficult location even without the armor. A drain hose can be routed through the drain port in the armor.
  • 3.0 Ecodiesel: An aftermarket drain valve is *highly* recommended with this engine, and should be installed with an oil change at the time of installing this armor. The oil drain is in a difficult location even without the armor. A drain hose can be routed through the drain port in the armor.

Installation

The One Piece of Armor Every Ram Needs

If your Ram truck ever leaves the paved road you need this skid plate. I had a trip to Moab planned last year and I felt uneasy about the plastic transmission pan and exposed tubing running under the truck. The only solution out there was the Dethloff MFG Engine-Transmission Armor that was just about to be put into production. Dethloff MFG worked hard to get me a skid plate in time for my trip but when they had an unfortunate delay for their production launch, Dethloff MFG sent me the preproduction model right off of their own truck. Right out of the box you can tell that this armor is built to withstand tough hits and it definitely did on our trip. That massive clunk in the attached video is me dropping my truck right onto the armor. I have continued since then to scrape and drop this armor hard on dozens of boulders and rocks with only minor scuffing of the paint. Protect what is important, if you have a Ram and are looking for armor this should be the very first one to get.
